I heart notes.

I used to be a big fan of passing notes. I remember folding them all special-like and keeping them in my back pocket because everyone knows that's where you put your notes. And your pink or purple hair pick. Radical.
Anyway. I love to take the notes that the students are writing and read them. I don't read them to the class, that's embarrassing. Sometimes I make up something different that the note can be about and say that out loud, because that is funny. Especially if it's a dumb note.
Today while the students were finishing "Apollo 13", I confiscated an especially juicy one. Stupidly, I ripped it up and threw it away, but don't worry. I just spent the last twenty minutes taping it back together. This is the only kind of puzzle I like. It's especially challenging when it's double-sided. But I did it for you.
I will be changing the names to protect the guilty. A little info to help you understand: "George" is one of my favorite students; he is the mac-daddy of the school. One day we did a data graph (data was a vocab word) of all the girls he has dated. He was a great sport about it. He has recently been dating Mary, they even had a month anniversary earlier this month, but sadly, "Mary" moved across the valley. It was truly tragic. Crying all around in the lunch room. To make it worse, they were both in my 7th period and I loved to tease them. Anyway. "Sara" is also in my 7th period (along with 4 other girls he has dated) and I'm not going to lie, she drives me absolutely insane. Anyway. Enjoy.

So George wat do you lyke about Sara!
um she is cute has a big a[**] and her atitude you now how she is

You have Sara here your gurl idk were she is you see your gurl on week-ends [circled] & you see Sara every single day!
Yeah thats true pero [but] I am not just going to leave the girl

After the movie we had some down time where I went and called George the school pimp and congratulated him on his noble effort to not just ditch Mary. It was a nice little convo. Then we talked about the upcoming talent show and then I sang a bit of "Greatest Love of All". I won't lie, it was pretty amazing. This is why I like to be a teacher.

Mi Casa es Su Casa!

But really it's mi casa. I can't believe I have my own house. It's totally weird! A huge thanks to Alan and April, Erik and Kami, and Laura and Dad who helped me move (and clean) for most of Saturday the 9th! I really really appreciate it! No thanks to Tracie, the slacker, who felt she needed to dance all day. Whatever.
The move went really well, I had packed everything and stacked it all in the family room, then we formed an assembly line up and down the stairs to load it into cars while Alan and Dad went to pick up my furniture (love seat, oversized chair and coffee table) from April's sister Heidi who gave me an unbelievable deal on the fun purple set! I love it a lot! Thanks Heidi!! I had my bedroom set and a few boxes in a storage shed and my fridge at RC Willey but everything made its way to Keltic Court and everything is now at least in its proper room! Proper places will come soon.

I wrote all of that right after I moved, but now I've been here for two weeks and I still love it! The funny thing is that I totally had a breakdown the first Sunday night I was here where I was totally doubting my decision. But I think I was just lonely and bored. . .but then I got my tv hooked up and we're good to go! Today Dad, Alan, Erik and Laura came to help frame the basement. Tracie finished painting the bathroom, and did awesome! Laura and I did a lot. We measured some lumber and. . . watched. When Erik had to leave I was able to hammer a bit but my arm got tired after, like, 10 nails. So wussey. We got most of the bedroom done and have plans for the rest! I'm super excited, now I just have to find a roommate to fill it!

Here it is!
Last Saturday I brought the kids over while Mom and April made applesauce at Mom's. We played hide and seek and then watched a movie. Good times! This is mostly all we did. Give or take a measurement or two. Thanks for all your help guys!

Remember the holidays?

Yeah. Good times. I think I talked a little about Thanksgiving, but I forgot to post these awesome moments:
The Utah Human Race "turkey trot" Thanksgiving morning. I liked it, great way to start the day!
Christmas. Awesome! I love Christmas. I am really bad at keeping surprises (secrets are different, don't worry) so it was sooo hard for me to not tell Tracie about her Muse tickets. I'm stoked to go, I hear they put on one of the best shows out there. Tracie gave me a "moving out survival kit" that is pretty hilarious. Maybe I should post some tidbits. . .
"With only a probably gross and ignorant roommate as a friend, you may find yourself bored in your new house. . . ." --hot wheel cars.
"While not having a neighbor to get ready with in the mornings that takes all your stuff may seem like and advantage, we both know you are concerned with the upkeep of your good looks after you are gone. . . .merely take one look at this next present and you can swagger with confidence throughout the rest of the day. . ." --door mirror that says "what would Tracie say?".
"Now I know your biggest concern is not having a slave around. [editors note: this is true.] While this may seem daunting and even a reason to not move out, this will enable you to help yourself while not having to get up." --gopher tool, as seen on tv The clawwwww!
"I have something very important to address before I give this next present. Living by yourself, you may find things where you yourself initially put them. What does this mean? No one has been touching them, borrowing them, using them, taking them to school for dance company, or eating them. Take a minute to absorb that. I know, it's a big one. The first time you experience this awful even, you may start to hyperventilate and/or cry in complete and utter horror. You just need to fight past it, KK, I'm sorry. It's just another step of moving out. But the next present works in two ways. It A. is there to remind you to keep up your hygeine: I can't be there to constantly remind you like your old wife. And B. to compensate for all I have taken! I know it's been a blessing to be my host in this parasitic relationship, but it's time to end that. (I'll probably still be by every night to try and help you make the transition easier by taking things. You are welcome.)" --pads. the big package.
She's hilarious. So funny. She better come over every night. It really does make me sad that we won't be neighbors anymore.
I drew Erik and Kami's names, and made them a calendar with pictures of them. I won't lie, it's pretty awesome.

I also revisited the old days and sled down the hill with the kids! It was awesome! Sledding down the hill used to be the highlight of the winter. We would wait and wait and wait until there was enough snow so we didn't damage the grass. All the friends would come over with their "permission slips" from their parents so they wouldn't sue us when they broke their face and we would play forever! Well, this lasted maybe an hour. First Audrey went inside, after one run down the hill. Then Toria got cold. Brady stayed out with me until his little cheeks were red and he wanted some hot chocolate. It was great!
Brayden was super fearless and was ripping down the hill on the blue saucer for a while, but by the time I got my camera out there, he wouldn't even do it for a dollar. That's big time when you're five. I guess it kept taking him over a bump. It was cute, though.

And, finally, 2009 ended with a par-tay at Erik and Kami's. It was good times, very chill and relaxed. Oh yeah, I got a speeding ticket. On the way to the party. At 8 pm. Where the cops were waiting for drunks. Really? That early? I wouldn't know. This is bad, guys. And I have a lot of things that could have prevented it, and I would really really really like to blame it on the retarded train engineer that parked the train over 5600 west for 10 minutes, started moving and parked again with only FIVE CARS TO GO before it cleared the road. . . . 25 minutes. That's right. TWENTY-FIVE minutes. I know, who stays that long? Whatever. The bottom line is, Kathrin, lighten up on that gas pedal.
So. 2010. Pretty excited. So far, scheduled to close on the house on Wednesday, get keys Friday, and then we'll be moving in and finishing the basement all month long! I'm so excited. It's going to be a great year.

Cruise anyone?

Hey! I'm going on a cruise February 14-21 to the Mexican riviera and two of the girls in my room can't go. . .so if we don't want to pay more (can't, buying a house!) then we need to fill those spots!
It is $462 and my flight cost about $200. . . . Not bad for a 7 day vacay, right?

If you're interested, let me know!

Profound.

Invictus
William Earnest Henley (1849-1903)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

I memorized this poem with Ms. Heart in either 10th or 12 grade English, I'm not sure. I had forgotten most of it, but the last two lines have always resonated with me. Aside from being beautifully written, they are true.
Tracie and I saw "Invictus" today and it was very powerful. Morgan Freeman was picture-perfect as Nelson Mandela and I don't know much about the guy he played, but I thought Matt Damon did amazingly. I just loved it. It made me want to learn more about South Africa, and Mandela, and rugby. I highly recommend it.

Officially becoming an adult

If graduating from college, having a job in a career and almost turning 30 doesn't do it, I'll officially reach adulthood on January 6. This is the day I am expected to close on my townhouse! It is in Balmoral Community, on 5600 west and 2800 south. It's totally cute with three levels and covered parking. I am finishing the basement, and when it is done there will be 4 bedrooms and 2 baths, and I may eventually put in a master bath.
I'll take pictures when we close, probably before we paint, and let you see it! I'm so excited!
